Living in Perfect Joy
(with all the wisdom of a pinto bean)

Rolando Rodriguez

A MEMOIR that the author, Rolando Rodriguez, describes as follows: "This is a recollection of a journey that began in San Antonio, Texas, where I was born into a Spanish-speaking household. When I was four, my father bought our first house, and I began to learn English from my Polish playmates. I attended high school and the freshman year of college at a Franciscan seminary in Chicago. While there, my best friend and I decided that we were Catholic school “hot house plants.” If we were going to be counseling people about their lives, we should learn about life outside of the “hot house,” so we enlisted in the Marine Corps.
"The Marine Corps offered a crash course in living life on the edge. After an honorable discharge, I was on the edge. A burnout as a social worker in President Johnson’s War on Poverty and an unconsummated marriage spurred my
hejira to Key West, where I met John. He and I spent 35 years there, living, working, playing, and ministering through good and not-so-good times.
"John and I moved from the southernmost community on the Atlantic Ocean to the westernmost community on the Pacific. We spent 15 years here, living on a mountain, enjoying the solitude and occasional visits by friends.
John passed away five years ago. I continue my journey alone, but not lonely."
