ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Weld Champneys’ mother often said he was good at “making up stories,” and more than one of his teachers called him “creative.” One can only wonder if they were complimenting. Poet, artist, or library director were not what he wanted to be when he grew up. He wanted to be a forest ranger, same as the other guys. Though retired now with his wife and cat on the woodsy Oregon coast, he still at times wonders what he’ll be when he grows up.
