Why Did It Happen? is about a father's depression threatening to ruin his family, and a younger brother helps to take care of his older brother with severe cerebral palsy. Caleb, the youngest, tells the story of the family's love and sacrifice. Troy is the older brother using his disability at times to get preferential treatment. This causes friction between the two of them. Troy and Caleb fight a lot, but they do love each other. When the father leaves for California, he never returns home. Caleb shoulders the burden while his mother works making the ends meet. He is jealous of his friends’ normal lives. Caleb vows to leave Troy and his mother when he becomes eighteen. He wants to be a drummer in a band having a regular life.
“Steven Salmon's remarkable journey in life and letters continues with Why Did It Happen? This new novel focuses on a family dealing with disability and psychological issues. They face formidable obstacles. I submit that this novel's existence is shining proof that they can be overcome.” ~ Doug Moe, Journalist and Award-Winning Author of MOMENTS OF HAPPINESS: A Wisconsin Band Story (with Mike Leckrone)
“In his new novel for middle grades, Why Did It Happen? Steve Salmon does something new and necessary. He goes beyond an account of what someone with cerebral palsy must face and shows the strain that one young man's disability places on an entire family. This is a vividly written narrative that is emotional depicting life as physically challenging.” ~ Larry Watson, Author of White Crosses, Justice, In A Dark Time, and Montana 1948
“Author Steven Salmon pens a tough topic, middle-grade novel that’s raw and real, taking on issues that provide a window into the dynamics of a family that’s dealing with a severely disabled son and a mentally ill father. The story is told from the perspective of the son/brother as he deals with the complexities of helping to care for his brother amidst much family turmoil. It should be noted that despite dealing with the limitations of severe cerebral palsy himself author Salmon perseveres with his writing by tapping out morse code with touch pads connected to a computer.”
~ Valerie Biel, Award-winning Author of a book series: Circle of Nine: Beltany, Novella Collection, Bressa’s Banishment, and Sacred Treasures; Haven, Taking Flight, and Beyond the Cemetery Gate: The Secret Keper’s Daughter
“WHY DID IT HAPPEN? is a coming-of-age novel that captures the complex life of Caleb, a young man learning to navigate a world that is different from others his age while at the same time growing up and feeling the same changes, pressures, and challenges young men experience. Salmon captures the emotional toil that living with a brother with a severe disability brings. As you read it, you recognize yourself and ask the question: "What would I do if I lived in this house?" This is a thought-provoking journey that leaves the reader appreciating the love between siblings, the strength of a family, and the resilience of people affected by the challenges others face.“Thank you for sharing this with me. Every time I read your work I become a better person.”
~ Dave Strong, Northland Pines School District, School of Options Applied Research High School Advisor, Computer Science
