Maverick Priest
by Fr. Harry J. Bury, Ph.D.

• Priest, Professor, Political Activist,
Servant for Peace •

This is the story of one man’s unique journey around the world, in the name of human connection, peace, and active nonviolence. Father Harry J. Bury, Ph.D. is a Catholic priest unlike any you have ever met. His travels through Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Costa Rica, Philippines, Africa, Palestine, and Israel span over 60 years. His life-long dedication has always been to interact lovingly with citizens of the world in pursuit of peace and nonviolence.  His determination to help his fellow human beings put him in sometimes compromising and often dangerous situations with American law enforcement, foreign governments, and the church alike. He was:

  • Arrested at the Pentagon in 1969,
  • Chained to the gates of the American Embassy in Saigon in 1971,
  • Served at the side of Mother Teresa in Calcutta in 1971,
  • Arrested by Swiss Guards for saying Mass on the steps of the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome in 1971,
  • Participated in the release of American POWs in Vietnam in 1972,
  • Con-celebrated Mass with Pope John Paul II at Mother Teresa’s Beautification Mass in 2004,
  • Kidnapped at gunpoint in Gaza in 2005, and
  • Awarded the key to Ho Chi Minh City in gratitude for his efforts to end the war in 2014.

PRAISE FOR Father Harry Bury and his book:

"This book is an extraordinary gift to those who are grappling with challenges and complexities of being authentically human and non-violently active at the dark edges of our evolving world. Harry Bury’s wisdom and courageous pursuits give deep meaning and inspiration for living on the frontiers of war and human struggle. Harry is one of the most interesting persons I know and his book is no less intriguing. A must read! " ~ Sister Judith Cauley

"Maverick Priest is the story of a remarkable Man of God who, in a very real sense, devoted his life to living the life of a true Christian. A remarkable book of self-sacrifice." ~ Arun Gandhi, Founder/President, Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute, Rochester, New York, www.arungandhi.org

"It has been my privilege to know Harry Bury since I was in grade school. He has been a major force in my life, for my entire life.  One of the many wonders of this man is the force he is to all who meet him. He carries with him pure kindness and compassion. His life has been lived with an utter determination to make the world a place of peace and nonviolence. He never stops believing that it will happen and working to make it so.  Maverick Priest opens the doors Harry has traveled through in the world, and in his conscience, one experience more remarkable than the next, ever hopeful and uplifting.  This Maverick Priest, I am certain, will become a force in the lives of all who read him.  God Bless his gentle soul."
~ Nancy Nelson, Television News Anchor, Stage and Film Actress, Radio Host, Named by CBS Sunday Morning as the “Infomercial Queen”

"Maverick Priest by Father Harry J. Bury is an extraordinary book by an extraordinary Catholic priest.  Fr. Bury has been a warrior for peace in our violent world for most of his 90 years. He has waged peace in Vietnam, India, Africa, Palestine, Israel, and elsewhere. He has led demonstrations for peace everywhere and served at the side of Mother Teresa in India. In Gaza, he pleaded, "For God's sake, for humanity's sake, stop the killing!" His relentless peacemaking efforts offended some governmental, political, and church authorities; and he has been arrested and jailed everywhere, and once kidnapped at gunpoint.  But nothing could dissuade him from taking seriously and acting on Jesus' command to "love."  "Forgiveness dominates Jesus' life and teaching," he writes.  This is no ordinary pastor.  Peacemakers run the risk of being jailed, abused, and even crucified. But it was Jesus who said, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God." (Matthew 5:9) ~ Cal Samra, Editor of The Joyful Noiseletter, Author of In Pursuit of Health and Longevity and The Physically Fit Messiah

"Maverick Priest by Father Harry Bury, who lives up to the title of his remarkable and honest autobiography, offers us a deep and profound insight into the good intentions and flaws of "the church" and of ourselves. He bares his soul in his writing as he gives us a glimpse into the minds and hearts of religious and secular leaders—including Mother Teresa, who was a special friend and inspiration to him.

"His commitment and dedication to helping the people of Vietnam is commendable as is his commitment for us to understand the unjustified atrocities eventuated by wars.

"A major theme of Bury's book is we must stop using war as a means of international policy and make every effort to build bridges of understanding between countries—and each other. He emphasizes this can only happen if we are willing to put major efforts into understanding ourselves as individuals in order to better understand others. His book will inspire you to open your mind and heart to the most important three words in all literature: God is Love."  ~ Paddy S. Welles, Ph.D., co-author of LOVE AND WAR:Human Nature in Crisis

"Maverick Priest: A Life on the Edge is an inspirational book about Fr. Harry Bury, and it is a much-awaited companion to his previous book, An Invitation to Think and Feel Different in the New Millennium, in which he expressed his ideas about a wide range of topics.
"We first came to know Fr. Harry at the Newman Student Association at the University of Minnesota in 1966. He breathed life into the Mass and showed how the liturgy could be both a joyful community and a call to action. He officiated at our marriage and sent us off to the Peace Corps.
"His life has continued to be an inspiration. Most recently, we called him from Florida where we were visiting Sandy’s mother, Retta, who turns 97 in July. He answered the phone with his upbeat trademark greeting, “Happy Thursday!” His exuberance takes you a little off guard as he crosses the boundary that separates people. He sent his love to Retta.
"On the political and social scene, he said he was angrier than ever. In answer to the question of what we should do, he said that you must have faith. It is this call to action, joy in people, and faith in God that make him such a great man and make his life a great read." Sandy and Charlie Slater
